For a Mexican restaurant that is on the US/MEXICO border, you'd think the food would be good -- and the restaurant has somehow stood the test of time...they've even grown into more than one place in the city...but the food is CRAP! So many better choices...I could do better cooking for myself using OLD EL PASO seasoning packs and bottles of DEL MONTE TACO SAUCE.
The service & ambiance were nice, but the food made it a place never to return to. |

This is good mexican food. I went there for years when I lived in El Paso. I've tasted Mexican food in Metro area of Dallas, Pheonix, California and even in Tennesee (poor!), but still go back to Avila's whenever I am in town. Love those sopapillas too!
I even lived in Mexico City and far prefer the northern mexico tastes. |

Avilas is the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. I do not see how they can call it Mexican food. Around three years ago, a friend and myself, went to Avilas for dinner. We ordered tacos, which had hardly any flavor and the beans and rice had an after taste. About a year later, another friend invited me out to eat. She wanted to try Avilas (she had never been there). So reluctantly agreed and I warned her of my past experience. We both ordered the enchilada plate. The red sauce tasted as if it came out of a can. Needless to say, we did not finish our plate and left. Never again will I go to Avilas. Other El Pasoens I know (Hispanic, Anglo or Black) feel the same way. |
