I'm 35, so don't let the subject line distract you; anyhow, I think I'm going to die early due to eating blue corn enchiladas from Viola's every weekend like clockwork, when the sopapillas are ready. Note they make the best Sopapillas of any restaurant in New Mexico that I know; I guess there is at least one good restaurant in Taos that does too, but I forget the name. One day I was so hungry I had to eat two of their Blue Corn Enchiladas. There is a difference between the blue and white/yellow, it's a texture difference, blue corn tends to be firmer and taste may be different. Also get it with beef and posole, red chile. Green chile is okay if you are a green chile person, but I'm a red chile guy. Usually get green chile and chicken, or red chile and beef, those are the two common combinations for New Mexican food. Also, their sodas are fixed just right with the right balance of syrup and carbonation. It is a bit cold in the winter, but I will wear extra clothing if it comes to that. The old KFC building is much better than the old location, because the old location, I believe, had a smoking section and the new one doesn't. That may be why some don't like it much anymore, but I hate cigarette smoke and the smell. There is still a bar with barstools up front. Also with the big windows around the restaurant, in the morning you get a nice view of the mountains, sun. It's not the only New Mexican restaurant in Los Alamos, there are two others, but they are not open on Saturdays. (Those are De Colores and The Blue Window which also had good Blue Corn Enchiladas.) Because there are a lot of scientists at the lab that eat in town at the lunch hour, be sure to get to Viola's before 11:30 on weekdays. Also on Tuesdays is "Navajo Taco Day" (which adds to the enchilada equation Indian Fry Bread, which is something like a large Sopapilla, but with more substance). |

We eat at Viola's at least 3 times a week-sometimes breakfast and some times lunch. Their food AND service are extraordinary and I always hear several comments to that effect from other diners there. They had to move their restaurant because the old building they were in got torn down. The food there is just like eating your mom's or grandma's cooking. All homemade everyday! |

Over the years I have eaten at Viola's Restaurant several times, both at their old and new locations. To start, I liked their older location better, the ambience was better I thought and it seemed warmer and cleaner, more friendly. The new location, which is in an old KFC building, seems very cold and gritty. The finish work inside the restaurant is shady and it just doesn't look nice. The food at Viola's is fine, for Los Alamos that is. A breakfast burrito there is pretty good but a bit overpriced. For the price I would go to Allied where the burrito is twice as big or over to Daylight Doughnuts where the price is better and I can get breakfast at any time of day. The service at Viola's is poor at best, definitely the worst service I have ever encountered, anywhere. The wait staff is mean and snappy, not good for wait staff, and their appearance (no offense) doesn't exactly make you want to keep eating... Overall I'd say, stay away from Viola's. There are much better places to go in Los Alamos where you will get a better eating space and better food, definitely better service. |
