A beautiful Mexican cantina and grill, which includes an outdoor dining area under roof, complete with painted wagon wheels. The restaurant occupies approximately half of the existing building, which at one time, long ago, was used in its entirety by another Mexican establishment, Casa Galvan, and, in the early 1960s by Matthew's Restaurant.
When first entering El Toro, one faces a multi-colored chalkboard which features daily specials and select entrees. Mexican art is everywhere. Some of the chairs and tables up close to the windows are of genuine Mexican construction. At the rear of the restaurant, one finds faux bottles of some of the finest tequila and other libations, artfully filled with colored water to keep thirsty patrons honest. It is a formidable display, and quite inviting. (The real bar can provide much of what the display doesn't.)
Both booths and tables abound.

El Toro's menu is similar to many generic Mexican menus, except that, here, the food backs it up! I tried the Shrimp Cocktail - Mexican Style, with an appetizer order of Guacamole. Chardonnay to match!
Usually (as I've eaten there before), the specie of wine you get at El Toro is Spanish in origin, sort of in keeping with an Hispanic tradition.
My Shrimp Cocktail was a taste sweeter than at another Mexican place I frequent, but the difference was refreshing. Best of all, the entree was COLD! The way it should be! Also, attention is paid to keeping white wines chilled, and the reds at room temperature.
Service was incredible, friendly, welcoming. (Waiters often use headsets during busy hours.) Don't get them started on wines. They'll bring you a sample for tasting! |
